PAX 2016 Vintage Revews

2016 PAX Sonoma Hillside, Sonoma Coast 100 points
The 2016 Syrah Sonoma-Hillsides has been nothing less than stunning on the three occasions I have tasted it so far. A wine of extraordinary purity and depth, the 2016 dazzles from the very first taste. The richness and power are simply breathtaking. Bacon fat, smoke, grilled herb and lavender are woven into a graceful, seamless core of inky blue/purplish fruit. Even with all of its intensity, the 2016 remains remarkable light on its feet. The Sonoma-Hillsides is a blend of fruit from Castelli-Knight Ranch, Griffin’s Lair and Walker Vine Hill, done with 100% whole clusters and aged in a combination of concrete and neutral oak, with no SO2. I am not sure it will matter, as most bottles will be long gone before that is an issue. Quite simply, the Sonoma-Hillsides is a total pleasure bomb and a modern-day benchmark for Syrah in California. Don’t miss out! Drinking Window 2018 – 2026. (Vinous, Antonio Galloni, April 2018)

2016 PAX Gamay Sonoma Coast  91 points
The 2016 Gamay (Sonoma Coast) is just as delicious from bottle as it was from barrel. Whole clusters add savory top notes and brightness to a core of bright, varietal fruit. Pliant, supple and inviting, the Gamay is a winner. Drinking Window 2018 – 2023. (Vinous, Antonio Galloni, Jan. 2017)

2016 PAX Carignan Testa Vineyard 92 points
The 2016 Carignan Testa Vineyard is an absolutely delicious wine that screams with varietal character. Sweet red cherry, rose petal and blood orange notes all run through this super-expressive, pliant Carignan. The 2016 is not especially complex, but is impossible to resist.

2016 PAX The Vicar North Coast 92 points
Pax’s 2016 The Vicar shows what a gorgeous vintage this is. Fresh, vibrant and wonderfully nuanced, the 2016 is a striking, translucent wine that conveys energy, vivacity and purity. The Vicar, the entry-level wine in the Pax range, overdelivers in 2016. The blend is 50% Grenache from Alder Springs and 50% old-vine Mourvèdre from Bedrock, done with 100% whole clusters, a combination that works brilliantly. Don’t miss it. Drinking Window 2018 – 2024. (Vinous, Antonio Galloni, April 2018)
